Welcome

to Our Sugar Land Memory Care Community: The Rivers Care Unit

The Rivers Care Unit takes a different approach to Memory Care. Inspired by the Montessori Method, we focus on what residents can do, not what they can’t do. Our activities engage the senses to create positive emotions. This helps people feel more comfortable and connect to long-term memories.

The Rivers’ residents choose their activities and engage in daily life with the community. Residents do things like help prepare snacks and take part in creating each week’s menus. This voluntary involvement reduces agitation, anxiety, and wandering.

Every day at The Rivers is busy and exciting, with planned events and time for exercise and outdoor activities. From cooking to gardening to games and puzzles, we provide the stimulation and interaction that our residents need.

Our warm, encouraging approach to Alzheimer’s care can help your loved one thrive. We nurture our residents so they can live comfortably and happily. The Rivers Care Unit even includes a salon for haircuts, shampoos, and pedicures.

Of course, The Rivers residents also have access to The Village at Sugar Land’s amenities, including communal spaces. These include inviting living spaces, beautiful gardens and patios, a dog park, and a library. The Village’s events calendar is full of fun and engaging activities, from exercise classes to arts and crafts.

Mealtimes here are a time to be together and enjoy food that is delicious and nutritious. Our culinary team creates fresh, chef-prepared dishes tailored to dietary needs and preferences. Additionally, our residents share mealtimes in a warm, inviting dining room that fosters community and togetherness.

FAQS

What is memory care, and how is it different from assisted living?
Memory care is specialized senior living for people with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Unlike assisted living, where residents manage more of their own routine, memory care provides 24-hour supervision, secured environments, dementia-trained staff, and structured programming designed to reduce confusion and support cognitive function.
The Village at Sugar Land’s memory care program is inspired by the Montessori Method, which focuses on what residents can do rather than what they can’t. Activities are designed to engage the senses, create positive emotions, and help residents connect to long-term memories. This approach supports independence and dignity while reducing anxiety and confusion.
The Village at Sugar Land offers a full activity schedule from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily including cooking, gardening, games, puzzles, and outdoor exercise. Residents also help plan weekly menus and prepare snacks, which builds routine and a sense of purpose. Beyond programming, the community has an on-site salon for haircuts, shampoos, and pedicures, and mealtimes are designed as social experiences with nutritious, enjoyable food.
Wandering affects around 6 in 10 people with dementia and is one of the biggest safety concerns families face. Memory care communities typically use secured entrances, alarmed doors, and enclosed outdoor spaces to keep residents safe. At The Village at Sugar Land, the structured daily schedule and high level of meaningful engagement also play a direct role — residents who are actively involved in purposeful activities throughout the day experience significantly less agitation and wandering.
Memory care is generally most appropriate for people in the middle to later stages of dementia, when needs around safety, supervision, and behavioral support become more complex than assisted living can provide. The Village at Sugar Land’s program is designed to meet those needs with individualized engagement and a structured, supportive environment. Families are encouraged to contact the community directly to discuss their loved one’s current stage and whether the program is the right fit.
Placing a loved one in memory care is an emotional transition, and ongoing family involvement makes a real difference in resident wellbeing. The Village at Sugar Land supports families with educational programs on dementia, monthly family events, and ongoing support groups. These resources help families understand what their loved one is experiencing, stay connected to the community, and find support from others in similar situations.
